Ladies, this isn’t a boys only club. I’m here for you warrioresses too. Strong is the new sexy – and the skinny-n-weak look is old news.
All those fad diets and quick weight loss programs can be thrown out of the window into oncoming traffic, because as it turns out, getting stronger is the way forward after all.
You don’t have to become a beast, unless you want to of course, but muscle and strength can be shaped and molded to fit your goals.
And you are the sculptor.
I don’t want to sound like an a$$hole straight off the bat, but I know what I’m talking about. Whereas a hog load of people out their with shiny websites and big ideas haven’t got the first clue!
There’s got to be a reason bro science has the initials BS, because that’s about what it amounts to – a lot of BS.
It’s the craftiest form of BS though, because it’s often spouted by fairly big dudes in the gym, and you would be forgiven for thinking “hey, this fairly big dude looks kind of like he knows what he’s talking about…maybe I should listen.”
To add more confusion, they are sometimes correct, which makes it difficult to know when they are giving you valid advice or talking out of their rectal passage.
Mistake number one is to assume anyone that looks the part knows their sh!t. Of course they know how to do some free weights, machine exercises and drink a protein shake.
But that doesn’t mean they are as strong, powerful, well built, balanced and injury free as they could be, or should be given the time investment they’ve made.
Are they strong from the inside out? Is their core a pillar of stone or a house of cards? Do they even do their big compound lifts?
Anybody can learn the basics, even if it’s through trial and error.
Learning the basics efficiently and correctly, to the point that they are second nature, then expanding on them and maximizing your potential, however, is a different kettle of fish.
So now, these BS guys (and girls) have websites, as anyone with a computer and an internet connection can. They fire off poorly written article after poorly written article, telling some truth and some bananas, while letting you find out the hard way which is which.
Even advice from people who do know what they’re talking about can differ from the next person. Not all successful bodybuilders and strength athletes use the same methods, schedules and diets, after all.
Furthermore, some of the theory and practice that was considered cutting edge ten years ago is no longer relevant. On the other hand, a lot of it still is.
What you need is someone to help you discover what works for you, and cut out the crap that makes the process unenjoyable or harder than it has to be.
That is 100% my goal.
A little more about me: I’m opinionated.
Health alarmists drive me crazy. It’s as if they think eating kale chips and protesting outside fast food restaurants will make them immortal.
You can wear a gas mask, hook your veins up to liquidized quinoa and do a cider vinegar cleanse 24 hours a day if it makes you happy, but you’re still going to die one day.
Fun fact: vegans die every day.
I’m not saying don’t eat a healthy diet. Far from it. I am a huge proponent of a healthy, balanced diet. If nothing else, eating is the most anabolic activity we do.
What I’m saying is: the odd chocolate bar, pizza, can of coke, pint of beer or glass of tequila isn’t going to kill you. And sometimes, dare I say it, it’s the very thought of one of those things that can get you through a hardcore gym session.
Crossfitters call themselves “the fittest people on earth.” And that’s okay, they can have that. It’s not a bad thing to embrace that status. But if I see one more video on social media of those f#ckers walking on their hands…!!!!
With social media and all sorts of health and fitness communities, companies and individuals vying for the click of your follow or like button, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by it all.
Should you be walking on your hands, eating that weird meal, doing that exercise, forcing your body into nutritionally induced ketosis…?
It’s difficult to choose a path, and I’m pretty much just paving another one. That’s why I encourage you to read lots of opinions, argue with them, read mine, argue with me…but check in with me regularly and I promise you will get something out of it.
